Committee Recommendation

That Council approve the area of land commonly known as the Jackson Trails Park, located at 1018 Main Street in Stittsville, be officially named “Pioneer Plains Park.”

REPORT RECOMMENDATIONS

That Council approve the area of land commonly known as the Jackson Trails Park, located at 1018 Main Street in Stittsville, be officially named “Pioneer Plains Park.”

Que le Conseil approuve le secteur d'atterrit ordinairement connu comme « le parc Jackson Trails », situé au 1018, rue Main à Stittsville, sera officiellement désigné « parc des Pionniers ».

BACKGROUND

On 15 January 2009, the Community and Protective Service Committee suspended the rules and voted on the following Notice of Motion.

WHEREAS it is of critical importance to retain the historical significance and legacy of our communities for existing and future generations;

AND WHEREAS the Jackson Trails subdivision was named in memory of Jackson Stitt, a founder of Stittsville;

AND WHEREAS the name “Pioneer Plains Park” references Stitt as the community’s pioneer, while referring to residents moving into Jackson Trails who are pioneering one of Canada's first energy star communities;

AND WHEREAS the community of Stittsville-Kanata West, Goulbourn historical groups, the developer and city staff support the name “Pioneer Plains Park”;

AND WHEREAS staff have reviewed the streets, facilities and parks databases and concluded there are no conflicts with the name “Pioneer Plains Park”;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Jackson Trails Park, located at 1018 Stittsville Main Street, be officially named “Pioneer Plains Park.”

CONSULTATION

City Operations

City Operations is supportive of the motion / supportive of commemorative name for this park.

City Clerk

Staff from the City Clerk's policy team reviewed the name "Pioneer Plains" and found that it does not fall within the scope of the Commemorative Naming Policy and Program.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

Funds are available within the Recreation capital budget for a park sign. 

DISPOSITION

Staff will take the appropriate action following Council’s decision.
